Upward Stars Upstate & the SCBCA are extremely excited to announce the first annual Showcase at the Star. Some of the best teams in the state of South Carolina will match up against one another during this one of a kind event on November 16, 2017 at the Upward Star Center.
Teams from the Columbia Metro area will face off against teams from the Greenville-Spartanburg area as they all prepare for the upcoming high school season. Proceeds that we receive from this event are going to go to the SCBCA to give to the "Herlong Scholarship" which helps scholarship athletes in South Carolina for college.
The following Columbia Metro area teams will compete at the Showcase at the Star: Ben Lippen, Blythewood, AC Flora, Gray Collegiate and Lower Richland.
AC Flora should be the preseason favorite in 4A & are the defending 3A Champs. AC Flora has been to three consecutive title games, winning two. Flora boasts one of the most talented rosters led by seniors guard James Reese and center DeShawn Thomas. Reese is a Buffalo commit while Thomas is still being recruiting my a host of schools. The Falcons have a stable of young talent but the headliner of the group is top ten, nationally ranked sophomore wing Christian Brown. After many playoff runs and a State Finals appearance with Ridge View Coach Combs is now leading the charge at Ben Lippen. Last season Blythewood was one of the favorites to win the State Championship and have a lot coming back from that group. This group is led by senior Keith Matthews who is a Stetson commit. Junior forward Robert Braswell had a solid sophomore season and should contribute again this year. Gray Collegiate boasts potential McDonald’s All American & top thirty nationally ranked Jaleek Felton. Felton is a UNC commit and the nephew of former UNC standout Raymond Felton. Gray has a host of talented underclassmen to go along with Felton but the cream of the crop is top fifteen, nationally ranked sophomore wing Juwan Gary. Traditional powerhouse Lower Richland is never short on talent and this year isn’t any different. Lower Richland will showcase two athletic senior guards in Campbell recruit, Jacor Nelson and Clyde Trapp. Trapp recently committed to Clemson.
Here are the Upstate teams competing in this year’s Showcase at the Star: Dorman, Byrnes, Wade Hampton, Greer and Boiling Springs.
Boiling Springs is a young team with sophomore guard Zach Baldinelli as their top guy. Baldinelli was hampered with an injury last year but is now back at 100% and playing with full confidence. Byrnes are the defending 4A Champs but will be competing in the new 5A Classification this year. Leading the Rebels will be Citadel commit Hayden Brown. Dorman will most likely be everyone’s favorite to win the 5A State Championship. Dorman will be led by seniors Zach Butler and Tae Cannon. Butler is a Ohio commit and Cannon is Catawba commit. The Cavs also have a flock of talented juniors to go along with their seniors. Junior big man Gabe Bryant has the potential to have a break out season for the Cavs. The Greer Yellow Jackets are blessed with a talented core group of juniors. By the time the playoffs come around this may be a team no one wants to play. Wade Hampton over the years has won as many games as anyone else and keeps some of the top players from the Upstate on its roster. This year’s team will follow the play of Luke Brenegan. The senior shooter will look to be the next General great.
Ben Lippen will play against Boiling Springs at 5 p.m. They will compete in a full game and then the remaining 8 teams will play round robin against each other from 6:15 – 8:45 p.m.
